Whatcha Think? Wednesday

Do you have a pet? Dog, cat, bird, fish, snake, rat? Anything? Well if you do you are among the 62% of US households that do.  That’s 72.9 million homes.  Sheesh!

Now from those 72.9 million homes it is estimated that $50.84 billion will be spent on their pets. Yep, billion. I think I just pooped. That includes food, vet care, grooming, and actual purchase.

It’s been stated that it would take $30 billion yearly to solve world hunger. This money would be spent on re-launching agriculture every year.  A “teach a man to fish” kind of solution.

I believe we live in an overly privileged, overly comfortable society as it is. Why not cut down a little on the “pet-icures” and give a little. As a pet owner myself I know the enjoyment that comes from our furry, scaled, and feathered friends. My point isn’t “don’t have pets” (in a grumpy old man voice) , it’s don’t spend so dang much on them.

Welcome to Tuesday friends! I have some helpful home beauty tips for you today.

Honey-Coffee Exfoliant: It’s pretty easy. Pour desired about of honey into a dish. Add about half the amount of coffee. Stir and use in the shower. It smells wonderful! I don’t suggest using it in the tub… you’ll be sitting in coffee by the time you’re done =)

Hot Oil Hair Treatment: Take about a 1/4 cup of olive oil (depending on the length of your hair). Heat lightly in the microwave for a few seconds at a time until desired temp. Pour on dry hair and work it in from root to tip. Wrap in a towel and let set for 20 minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual.

And a few Tidbits!

Custom Fabric Covered Wipes Container. So cute!

Sippy Cup Leash. Who’da thunk? Great idea.

Until we meet again,

Well friends, it’s “Mission Monday” and I have nothing big to share with you. Surprise surprise! I have made a little progress on my kitchen pantry, but there isn’t much food in there. We’ll see how it looks after I grocery shop. =)

To tide you over until I have something worth showing you myself I’ve found these two great tutorials. I will hopefully be incorporating them into my Organization mission.

Hanging Fabric Basket…. LOVE! This is going in my bathroom!

Soft Box Tutorial. These can get kind of expensive when you buy them in the store. This way you know they’ll match perfectly!

I will have something done for you myself next week. =)

Until we meet again,

Boy oh boy. I wasn’t sure what I was going to blog about today. My thought for “Funtastic Fridays” was to share great family fun and date night ideas. Well, I had a pretty fun date last night. Although do to a business meeting I started without my Mr.

Karaoke Night!

As an avid singer, it was kind of surprising that I had never been to a karaoke night. My voice is a little hoarse from all the hooting and hollering I did yesterday. =)

If you enjoy people, music, and fun than karaoke is for you. Even if you only sing along with your favorite tunes and don’t brave the mic yourself.

I will say that I enjoyed meeting my Mr at the joint. It was exciting anticipating him walking through the door and seeing how cute I looked for him. And, not that I’m that far past my teen years, but I felt like a teen again going out with my friends. 😉 Partially because my mom was our babysitter last night. And partly because the Mr was coming out later so I was graciously chauffeured by some good friends of ours.

There’s Patty and I getting our “Landslide” on!

All in all, it was probably the most fun and cheap date I’ve been on in a while! But, that all depends on how much you drink, tee hee.

Until we meet again,

This will be the first of a small series I’d like to call…
The Bandanna Project! Dun dun dun

I have a few bandannas I just found in my closet that I didn’t even remember we owned.  So, we’re going to see what we can do with ’em.

#1-Ruffle Bum Pants

Wouldn’t you love these in your size? Well, maybe we don’t need to accentuate that part of our body. 😉 But here is a tutorial on how to schnazz up a pair of pants for your little one. Because they can get away with it!

What you’ll need:
A pair of slightly boring pants
A scrap piece of fabric (in this case a bandanna)
Measure across the bum of the pants to determine the length of fabric you’ll need. For these pants the measurement was 10.5 inches. I like to add about another half of the length to get a good ruffle.

  • My fabric strips then ended up being 2.5 x 16 inches.
  • I cut 4 to cover the bum area.

Your next step is to iron in both short ends and one long end of each strip 1/4 inch.

You will then take the remaining long side and iron that in 1/2 inch.

Next you will take the long end with the 1/4 inch fold and iron that over again so that it overlaps the 1/2 inch fold. Once this is done you will have no raw edges visible on your fabric pieces.

Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch width on a normal straight stitch. Sew down the center of each strip only back stitching on one end. This way you can pull the threads to gather. Gather up each strip to the required length (10.5 in) and place a square knot (right over left, left over right) on the end to hold the gathering.

Once you’ve done that, it’s should be a squiggly mess like this. 🙂

Pin each ruffle and sew into place. I set my first line about 2 1/4 inches down from the waist band. I then set the next one just a hair under the previous.

And there you go! Ruffle Bum Pants!

Until we meet again,

Cosmetics, they’re safe right? You know, all the shampoos, lotions, and potions you use on yourself and on your children. If it says it’s safe for baby then it must be, right? Sadly, Nope.

According to The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

“Major loopholes in U.S. federal law allow the $50 billion cosmetics industry to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects and inadequate labeling requirements. In fact, cosmetics are among the least-regulated products on the market. ”

There is a particular list of ingredients, called the Toxic Twelve, that are in all kinds of products that you put on and in your bodies everyday.  Propylene glycol is on the list. It can be found in many lotions and conditioners. It can also be found as the main ingredient in anti-freeze. Ever read the warning label on anti-freeze?

 May cause birth defects huh?

You may say, “Well that’s if you swallow a lot,  I only use a little lotion.”
A little bit here and a little bit there over a lifetime can cause major problem.

For the majority of women who have breast cancer it occurs in the left breast.
The thoughts then, is that as most of us are right-handed and the we APPLY UNDER-ARM DEODORIZER more generously under the left arm, with a smaller amount being applied under the right arm due to lesser strength in our left arms.  Aluminium Hydroxide (deodorant main compound) was the material thought to be the possible cancer provoking substance.

Do your own research and check your products. The good news is, there are safe alternatives out there!

Isn’t paying a little more for body wash better than paying for cancer?

Until we meet again,

Emily Anna
